Native American Powwows in MA!

There’s no doubt that Massachusetts is full of history — from ancient artifacts to the world’s oldest floating commissioned warship to world-class art — you can see it, hear it, and even feel it.
In addition to a collection of museums, historical sites and landmarks, Massachusetts also boasts the experiential side of history, specifically, when it comes to commemorating Native American culture through a number of local Powwows.
So, today on MassFinds, we’ve gathered four Native American cultural events that are set to take place throughout the rest of the summer, and as we transition into the early fall.
Summer Moon Powwow: July 20–21, Danvers, MA
The first of these powwows is right around the corner! The Massachusetts Center for Native American Awareness will host the Summer Moon Powwow, which kicks off on Saturday, July 20, at 11:00 a.m. in Danvers’ Endicott Park. Over the course of two days, visitors will be treated to a variety of events and attractions.
Native American songs and dances will be performed by several different groups, with flute and drum music as well. Arts, crafts, games and storytelling are just a few more examples of the fun that awaits at the powwow, which will also feature Buffalo burgers, fry bread and more traditional food. 8^th Annual Rock, Rattle & Drum Powwow: August 10–11, North Adams, MA
Out west, in the Berkshires, North Adams will come alive with Native American culture during the second weekend of August, as Bowe Field plays host to the Healing Winds 8^th Annual Rock, Rattle & Drum Powwow.
“Lord of the Strings” Arvel Bird will headline a number of arts performances, which include singing, dancing and storytelling. Vendors will be on hand as well. Tickets to the events can be purchased at the door and are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors (65+) and youths (11-17), while entry is free for children under 10. For directions to Bowe Field, click here.
31^st Annual Bedford VA Hospital Powwow: September 21–22, Bedford, MA
Hosted annually by the Greater Lowell Indian Cultural Association, the Bedford Hospital Powwow is GLICA’s largest event of the year. Visitors will get the chance to hear native drumming and singing, in addition to camp outside overnight, if they so choose. For directions to the hospital grounds, click here.
2^nd Annual Harvest Powwow: October 19, Devens, MA
This powwow is just a one-day event, so there will be plenty to see and do from start to finish. Hosted by the United Native American Cultural Center, Inc., the 2^nd Annual Harvest Powwow will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the grand entry at 12 noon. Folks will get the chance to enjoy a day of drumming, dancing, raffles, fun and food, which will be available for purchase at the UNACC Food Tent. To see driving directions to UNACC, click here.
