OCTOBER 2017
Dear
Colleagues,
Autumn in Massachusetts evokes foliage tours, cider tasting, regattas
on the Charles, and so many activities that attract visitors to the Bay
State from across the US and around the world.
On the international front, our visitation rate grew beyond the
national average in 2016, as seen in our statistics below. In September
MOTT was part of the Brand USA India Sales Mission, and in November we
travel to New York City to meet international operators representing key
markets in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Japan and China.
On the domestic front, we are rolling out seasonal promotions such as
our new Thoreau Trail, MassJazz Guide, and 5 Things Fall. Our October
MA spotlight features Marita Rivera, head of the Museum of African
American History in Boston & Nantucket. Marita’s notion of museums
as gathering places resonates for residents, students and tourists who
care about our cherished history.
Thank you for working with us to promote Massachusetts as a
destination, in all four seasons, for visitors from all 50 states and
from around the world.

INDUSTRY
By The Numbers
According
to a new report released by the USTA, in 2016, 28 million domestic
and international travelers spent a record-breaking $20.7 billion in
direct spending in Massachusetts, contributing to the state’s
economic growth while increasing its workforce by 4,100 or 3 percent
to 139,100 jobs and generating $1.4 billion in combined state and
local taxes (up 5.1 percent from 2015).
Domestic travel spending totaled $17.9 billion, a 2.4 percent
increase over 2015 - just under the growth rate for the U.S. However,
the International spending increased by 3.1 percent to $2.8 billion,
compared to a decrease of 2.1percent nationally. See the MOTT
press release for more details.
The new non-stop air routes that have launched in and out of Boston’s
Logan International Airport along with MOTT’s concentrated marketing
efforts in targeted origin countries have contributed to the
substantial growth in international traveler spending in 2016.
International
India
Sales Mission
In
September, MOTT joined representatives from 41 U.S. tourism-industry
entities for the Brand USA India Sales Mission. The mission
introduced Massachusetts to India’s surging outbound-travel sector
through meetings with tour operators, travel agencies and media in
Mumbai, Chennai and New Delhi. The mission this year coincided with
the ongoing U.S. - India Year of Tourism Partnership in 2017.
With the expansion of flights through Emirates, Qatar Airways and
Turkish Airlines into Boston’s Logan International Airport, India’s
potential as an emerging market for Massachusetts is significant.
India is already the fifth largest source of international visitors
to Massachusetts, with 77,000 arrivals to the state in 2015. For more
details on MOTT’s India marketing initiatives, please contact Jackie Ennis.

Fall
for Massachusetts
Fall is
officially upon us, and leaf peepers are encouraged to take the
scenic route with breath-taking drives and bucolic hikes. To explore
by vehicle, iconic routes are detailed on our fall
foliage page with pit stops to enjoy along the way. And
for those seeking a closer look at color, a bevy of hiking
and trail options abound in every cranny of the
Commonwealth.
Cider, too, is a New England specialty that warrants special
attention in fall season, and we suggest celebrating with a sampling
of Massachusetts-made ciders. The best spots for tasting cider are at
local cideries and taverns, or at the signature cider event of the
year, Franklin
County CiderDays! Taking place from November 3 – 5, 2017,
this annual festival celebrates all-things-apple with tours, cider
making, tastings, workshops and more.
