Celebration of Thoreau’s 200th Birthday
May 2017-January 2018, Concord Museum/Thoreau Society, Concord
The 200th birthday of Concord’s native son, Henry David Thoreau, happens on July 17, 2017, and the Concord Museum is joining forces with the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City to honor the occasion. A planned joint exhibition will include the Concord Museum’s collection of Thoreau objects, which is the largest in the world, along with Thoreau’s manuscript journal, which is part of the Morgan Library and Museum’s collection. The dates are tentative, and include the exhibition opening at the Morgan from May 19 to Aug. 27, 2017, and then coming to the Concord Museum from Sept. 29 to Jan. 21, 2018. The exhibit will included approximately 250 artifacts, including furniture, ceramics, glass, metalwork, books, photographs, manuscripts and textiles as well as Thoreau’s principal manuscript journal, including the wooden box in which he stored many volumes. It also includes personal letters, manuscripts and related printed books.
