The Plymouth Tapestry will tell the story of early Plymouth in a heroically-scaled needlework piece, based on original artwork by Plymouth artist Elizabeth Creeden, and created entirely by hand by volunteer stitchers.

A visual exploration of history, memory, and culture, the Plymouth Tapestry illustrates the experiences of the Wampanoag people who inhabited the region for thousands of years, and the Pilgrims, the English settlers who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620 to establish a new home in a unique place. The multi-media-thread-on-linen embroidery will be comprised of twenty 6-foot-long panels. Through imagery and text, each panel reveals contexts and events that shaped the founding of Plymouth Colony. Selected panels will be displayed in fall 2019 and through 2020, with accompanying programs and opportunities to work in progress. The entire Tapestry series will be exhibited on completion in 2021.  9:30 am – 4:30 pm.

The Phil honors the Plymouth 400 Anniversary with a visual, vocal, orchestral and spiritual celebration called the Plymouth 400 Adoration of Place. Award-winning cellist Zlatomir Fung joins the orchestra for Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, a New World Concerto of sorts because Dvořák composed it here in America.  Choruses from Pembroke, Plymouth North and Silver Lake Regional High Schools lend their voices to Copland’s Simple Gifts and The Promise of Living, selections that exemplify hope and gratitude.  Wampanoag leader, historian and artist, Jonathan James-Perry stirs Native People’s ancestral heritage with First Light, a reference to the Wampanoag, or People of the Light, by Tonya Wind Singer.  The lives of early settlers come into focus through archival photos from Pilgrim Hall Museum set to musical touchstones: Copland’s music from the film, Our Town, and Miklós Rózsa’s The Mayflower from the film score to the 1952 film Plymouth Adventure.  We honor the many who have walked this place before us.
