This April it's time to get up close and personal with some of the most impressive ceramic talents the Northeast has to offer at the Worcester Center for Crafts' Pottery Invitational 2014. From April 11-13, the WCC brings twenty-two artists and their pots right to your doorstep for a weekend featuring an unprecedented look into the region's ceramic creative community. Current WCC Artists-in-Residence will demonstrate different making techniques and decorating styles in the newly renovated WCC Ceramics Studio. New this year is a series of Pop-up Artist Talks, or casual conversations between a team of six potters describing a technique or process for one of their pots, or choosing to discuss a favorite pot by another. Another new feature is called "Show-Off!," which consists of two demonstrations from experts in floral arrangements and food presentations designed to show how handmade pottery can be used in the home. "The Pottery Invitational is an exceptional opportunity to see a large and diverse range of pottery available for carry-away purchasing," said one of the event's curators, Kristen Kieffer, "and if you come, you get to interact with so many full-time studio potters and get the 'behind-the-scenes' story." The 2014 Pottery Invitational starts with a Benefit Preview from 5:30-6:30 pm on Friday, April 11, where attendees get first dibs on buying, a chance to hear Worcester Art Museum Director Emeritus James A. Welu informally converse about collecting ceramics with local collectors, and refreshments. Tickets can be purchased online, in person, or by mail with a $20 donation. The Invitational will open up free to the public that same night from 6:30 - 8:30 pm and offers attendees a chance to celebrate ceramics all over town with "One Night/Two Shows," a collaboration with Arts Worcester. Arts Worcester is opening a show of work by ceramic artist Sarah Williams. Pick up a ticket at our Pottery Invitational opening and bring it to theirs for a free drink at their gallery; if you go there first, you'll get a ticket to bring to us for a free raffle ticket. The Invitational is also open free to the general public on Saturday from 10 am - 5 pm and on Sunday from 11 am - 4 pm, when the demonstrations, Pop-up Talks, and "Show-Off!" will bring these incredible artists and their work to life in our very own Worcester Center for Crafts for one special weekend. Admission is free. Parking is available free of charge.
