Stephen Bates was a clarinetist with the Kennedy Center's Opera Orchestra for 36 years and also an abstract artist who works primarily in watercolor collage. His work has been exhibited in both The Watergate Gallery and The Parish Gallery. He currently lives in Manchester and will perform a program showing the integration of art and music. Bates will perform Brahms' Sonata No. 2 for clarinet and piano, Stravinsky's Three Pieces for Clarinet, and Stephen Kleiman's Sonatine No. 2 for clarinet and piano, "Inner Dance". During the program, he will show his own works of art and works by Kandinsky and briefly discuss Kandinsky's move towards abstraction (changing language) as well as synaesthesia--the connection between two senses--in this discussion the connection between colors or images triggered by different sounds.
