Local Ecologies is a research-driven arts and culture initiative that includes commissioned artworks, a traveling exhibition, and a series of public programs focusing on place-based explorations of Eastern Massachusetts. The program, initiated by Dr. Rebecca Uchill with Dr. Kirsten Swenson and Samuel Toabe in late 2018, is presented jointly by UMass Boston, UMass Dartmouth, and UMass Lowell, along with other regional satellite venues during the 2019-2020 touring exhibition period. The exhibition includes multidisciplinary works by artists who have visited New Bedford and the Boston region to consider our natural, social, and industrial ecologies and their histories.
