Yoga is a great way to relax.
Outdoor yoga? Even better.
Free, outdoor summer yoga in Boston? Now we’re talking!
Each week, there are more than a dozen free yoga classes taking place in the Boston area. You can join several free yoga classes most days of the week, and as time goes on, the number of sessions just seems to keep increasing.
Back in the summer of 2009, I noticed a trend of free, outdoor summer yoga classes being offered by chic Boston hotels and started blogging about it. The first one that I noticed was The Liberty Hotel hosting free Saturday morning classes in its courtyard.

Soon after, I found that InterContinental Boston introduced free yoga classes during the summer on its waterfront lawn, for guests and the community alike.
After that, the number of classes kept increasing and I wondered just how many classes there were. I decided to investigate and put together a list of all the free Boston area yoga classes I could find by time, day of the week and location, so that I could work a class or two into my own schedule.
For the past four years, I have been compiling an annual list and it has grown and changed over time.
One thing that many people may not be aware of is that The Liberty, in collaboration with Equinox Fitness Clubs, opens the free yoga classes to everyone. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to reap the benefit, so go ahead and add a free yoga class to your staycation!
A lot has changed since 2009. The InterContinental still has free yoga classes for their hotel guests and gym members, but other members of the community pay $25 for their Sunrise Yoga class.

Luckily, there are still many completely free yoga classes to choose from. The Frog Pond in Boston Common has free classes on Thursday nights. Spectacle Island in the Boston Harbor offers Island Yoga on Saturday mornings. On Tuesdays, all are welcome (hotel guest or community member) to attend a free early morning yoga class at Hyatt Boston Harbor.

Some classes, such as the Sunday morning class in Jamaica Plain with Branching Out Yoga, encourage a donation. Pictured above is an Afro Flow Yoga® class that I attended in Franklin Park. While it is free, a donation is encouraged to benefit charity.
Boston Medical Center’s Program for Integrative Medicine also has donation yoga classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays on a walk-in basis. Organizers are in the process of updating their online information.
There are also free yoga classes that pop up every now and then. The Free Yoga Boston Facebook page posts updates for classes like these, along with general news.

Take a look at the list and check the Facebook page to keep up to date, because there are many more classes. More often than not, you can find a time, day and location that’s convenient for your schedule.
But don’t wait too long. Not all, but most of the classes end with the summer, so there are just a few weeks left. Enjoy and Namaste!
