184th Annual Camellia Show
Dates: Sat, Mar 2, 2013 ~ Sun, Mar 3, 2013
Times: 9am-5pm daily
Description:
The Massachusetts Camellia Society, one of the oldest societies in the USA, will present its 184th Annual Camellia Show at Tower Hill Botanic Garden. See hundreds of gorgeous Camellia flowers at the peak of their display--both on the Camellia trees themselves as part of Tower Hill's own collection in the Limonaia (Lemon House), and also in bowls of floating blossoms from private collections. This is a perfect way to spend a winter day, amidst the subtropical greenery of Tower Hill's indoor spaces, with the backdrop of the dramatic Winter Garden. Camellia plants will also be for sale, so visitors can start their own collection.
Tower Hill's Camellia collection contains more than thirty-five camellias and twenty different cultivars, many of which came from Isabella Stewart Gardner and Nathaniel T. Dexter's personal greenhouse collections. Not hardy below Zone 7, they can thrive as potted shrubs indoors and be moved outside during the warmer summer months. When outside these glossy-leaved shrubs prefer partially shaded, sheltered areas with moist but well-drained soil. They often bloom from January to March and make a stunning late winter display. Visitors should look for such cultivars as 'Debutante', 'Dr. Tinsley', 'Alba Plena', and 'Mabel Bayard Thayer.'
Admission to the Camellia Show is included with regular admission to the Garden; and FREE for Tower Hill Members!
