Description:
Join us for the first event in the Freedom Rising Lowell Lecture Series launching the Museum's yearlong commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment, the first black soldiers from the north to serve in the Civil War. Through a new exhibit, lectures, concerts, Teacher Summer Institutes, and children's events, Freedom Rising in 2013 celebrates the roles of Boston's black and white abolitionists in monumental historic events.
Dr. Stauffer writes and lectures on the Civil War era, antislavery and social protest movements, and visual culture. His books include the newly released "The Tribunal: John Brown and the Road to Emancipation" and the critically acclaimed "Giants: The Parallel Lives of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln." Time Magazine, The Harvard Review and others have published his more than 45 essays, and he has appeared on numerous national radio and television programs.
