Since my husband and I purchased an old Railroad Station in Palmer in 1987 when both of us were in our early 20s, we started restoring the Station building - originally designed by renowned architect Henry Hobson Richardson, whose major works include Trinity Church in Boston and the Marshall Fields Building in Chicago. It took us 17 years of hard work before opening the restaurant's outdoor patio service in July 2004. Then in October 2005, we opened indoor seating allowing our guests to enjoy Richardson's striking interior design along with viewing many interesting artifacts from the glory days of passenger trains. During recent years, we've continued to develop The Steaming Tender as both a restaurant and historic destination for railroad enthusiasts. Based on its long and colorful railroad past, Palmer has come to be known as The Town of Seven Railroads. Although not presently an active railroad passenger stop, trains pass by this former Station several times a day - providing railroad buffs and others ideal photo opportunities as well as a unique dining experience. To enhance the railroad theme and attract more guests, we purchased a 1915 Port Locomotive and displayed it in the parking lot in front of the restaurant. We also acquired a 1909 copper-clad New Haven passenger car, restored and named it the Presidential Car. It's available for private parties.
