Massachusetts might not be the natural habitat for any really exotic animals (no, squirrels and pigeons don’t count), but that doesn’t mean you can’t have an animal adventure. We’re talking kangaroos at Southwick’s Zoo, gorillas at the Franklin Park Zoo, and penguins at the New England Aquarium. Lots and lots of penguins. If you’re looking to check some more birds off your list, the Berkshires is one of the best bird watching locations in the country. Then there’s horseback riding, with ranches for riding and learning all over the state. And if your kids like to get up close and personal with the animals, petting zoos at destinations like Smolak Farms and Lookout Farm will give them the warm and fuzzies. Just make sure they don’t take anything home.
