Massachusetts’ art and craft galleries are as eclectic as the art itself. Boston’s SOWA district (South of Washington Street) is packed with galleries, artist studios, restaurants, and cafes. Catch the buzz at SOWA’s First Fridays when dozens of galleries swing open their doors.

The Massachusetts College of Art & Design is the nation’s first independent public art school. MassArt’s seven gallery spaces showcase work by internationally acclaimed artists and designers as well as emerging artists. The galleries also routinely feature work by MassArt students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

MCLA Gallery 51, run by the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, presents work from a wide range of emerging and mid-career contemporary artists. Just down the street, of course, is the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Located on the campus of Phillips Academy, the Addison Gallery of American Art presents approximately twelve shows a year, both from its extensive collection of American art, and major traveling exhibitions.
