Geocachers from across the region are invited to Explore North Quabbin's (ENQ) first annual geocaching event on May 17 and 18 in central Massachusetts. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the adventure begins at the Johnny Appleseed Visitor Center, located between exits 34 and 35 on Route 2 west. (For directions, visit http://www.appleseed.org/about-johnny-appleseed-country/direction-maps-of-mass/address here, contact info for map) Participants will sign in, receive maps, and conclude the day at the Millers River Environmental Center, 100 Main St., Athol. On Sunday, the event begins at the Millers River Environmental Center and finishes with a cookout and awards ceremony at Diemand Farm, 126 Mormon Hollow Road, Wendell. During the two-day event, geocachers will follow clues hidden along carefully-tended hiking trails, within pristine woods and close to magnificent views of the historic Swift, Tully and Millers rivers. Participants will also receive free promotional gifts and discounts from ENQ's members, including Bruce's Browser, Colonial Hill Alpaca Farm Bed & Breakfast, Diemand Farm, New Salem General Store, Royalston General Store, The Jenkins Inn & Restaurant, The Kitchen Garden, Red Apple Farm, Winterwood at Petersham Bed & Breakfast and the North Quabbin Trails Association. The event also promises some at least for the old-timers in the crowd: ten years ago, the North Quabbin region hosted the first national geocache tournament.
