What do you think of when you hear the word "Massachusetts"? Maybe Boston, with its Freedom Trail and the Red Sox? Or the Berkshires and concerts at Tanglewood? See a new side of Massachusetts and ride off the beaten path this summer on the Mass BikePike Tour. The event, a benefit for the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition, is dedicated to celebrating the best of Massachusetts - and having a great time doing it! This year's edition of the Mass BikePike Tour will meander through the quaint towns and scenic farmland of Central Massachusetts. City-dwellers will never believe that such a serene paradise lies just an hour or so from Boston. Visit the apple country and 18th century utopia of Harvard, savor the all-day breakfast at old-fashioned classic diner in Oxford, or try to pick which town green is the most beautiful - our vote is for West Brookfield. Looking for a special challenge? Climb to the top of Purgatory Chasm or join our optional "group challenge" ride for an exhilarating experience. Our starting point for 2014 is in Shirley, MA - just an hour from Boston - and easily accessible by car or train. In fact, the ride is so convenient that Boston-area residents can join us after work on Wednesday and then enjoy the next four days of exploring on two wheels. You'll return home Sunday afternoon with new friends and fun memories of an adventure that whisks you far away from the daily grind. With a diverse crew of bicyclists from across the USA, our rolling party on wheels has earned its nickname "The Friendliest Ride in The East." You choose each day how far to ride: each day has a long (45-70 miles) or short (25-45 miles) ride available, with even shorter options for newer riders. The tour includes daily hearty breakfasts and dinners, rest stops along the route, and support vehicles. Camping facilities are provided, or there are B&B's or the "Comfy Campers" luxury tent service available if you'd like to sleep in style. After each day's ride, relax at our camping village and enjoy our pre-dinner social hour. After our meal, join us on excursions to local attractions like minor league baseball or country fairs, or roast marshmallows and chat with new friends at our nightly campfire. It's like summer camp - for adults! To join the fun, please visit www.massbikepike.org. Don't delay: the ride is limited to 150 riders, and the early bird discount ends on March 1st.
