Professional ensemble Blue Heron continues its annual exploration of neglected music from the Peterhouse partbooks, copied in 1541 for Canterbury Cathedral. Blue Heron (Scott Metcalfe, dir.) presents one of its favorite masses, Robert Jones's radiant Missa Spes nostra, one of the jewels of the Peterhouse source. The Mass will be recorded later in October for a World Premiere release in 2014, as Volume 4 of a 5-CD set. Volume 1 was lauded as "rich, muscular and expressive" (Early Music Review), and for "fine gradations of dynamics; telling contrasts of ethereal and earthy timbres; tempos that are more lusty than languid" (Alex Ross, in The New Yorker). Fanfare raved that the series gets "top marks in all respects". Preceded by a FREE pre-concert lecture by Music Director Scott Metcalfe, at 7:15 PM.
