In the 1830s, all male American citizens from 18 to 30 were active members of their local militia companies. This Labor Day weekend, Old Sturbridge Village will feature all the sights and sounds of the training days that these companies took part in at least twice a year. The days' events will include everything from cannon and musket demonstrations, to martial music and sham battles, and even live firing of muskets at targets. Come join us for what was one of the most storied events of the year for New Englanders in the 1830s.
