A Walking Tour at Harmony Grove Cemetery to honor Caroline Emmerton

SALEM -- All are invited to a free walking tour of the beautiful Harmony Grove Cemetery -- one of Salem's most notable private and historic garden cemeteries.

The tour will be led by Irene Axelrod, a historian with a special expertise in the life and work of Caroline Emmerton, The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association founder, and Margie Lavender, executive administrator of Harmony Grove Cemetery. On the tour, Axelrod and Lavender will discuss the cemetery and the life and legacy of Caroline Emmerton and her circle of friends. Caroline Emmerton, besides being The Gables' founder, preserved a number of historic structures and provided settlement house services to the Derby Street neighborhood. Her gravestone at Harmony Grove Cemetery will be viewed during the tour.

The walking tour is free and co-presented with Harmony Grove Cemetery. Those interested may meet at Harmony Grove Cemetery Chapel, 30 Grove St., Salem, on Sunday, June 12, at 1 p.m. Please call 978-744-0554 to reserve a spot on the tour or for more information.
