There are few works as irresistible as Schubert's Octet. Tracing both backward and forward, he followed in the footsteps of the Classical masters and gave us glimpses into the drama of the Romantic age to come. Join the Chameleon Arts Ensemble for a program centered on this glorious work as well as three composers who, in their own voices, pay homage to Schubert's genius. Robert Schumann idolized Schubert and his melancholy Romances for oboe and piano were written just after his fascination with the great master peaked. Lithuanian composer Onute Narbutaite's Winterserenade for flute, violin and viola is a delicate, crystalline miniature built from fragments of Schubert's celebrated song-cycle, Winterreise. Finally, John Harbison continues the path forward with his imaginative rendering of Schubert's journey into the next world, Hallucination in Four Episodes for piano quartet.
