Kwanzaa Celebration: Music, Drumming and Storytelling

Millions around the world celebrate Kwanzaa, a joyous celebration of family, community, and culture. It is a holiday that grew out of ancient African "first-fruit" harvest festivals, which celebrate the abundant good of life, the rich goodness of the earth, and all living things. It also rises out of our modern struggle for an inclusive freedom, a substantive justice, a dignity-affirming equality, and a life-enhancing power that people have over their destiny. Join us to discover the roots of Kwanzaa, created at the height of the Civil Rights Movement by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach. In 1966, Dr. Karenga combined aspects of several different harvest celebrations, such as those of the Ashanti and of the Zulu, to form the basis of Kwanzaa and seven principles or Nguza Saba, a set of ideals designed to enhance daily life and foster community pride. What better way to celebrate Kwanzaa than with the Paige Academy drummers, ranging in age from 5 to 10 years old, performing and participating in a celebratory ritual with music, storytelling, and a candle lighting ceremony.
