The Stockbridge Library, Museum & Archives is a vibrant center of community life in Stockbridge. The organization serves the needs of Stockbridge residents and visitors by promoting lifelong learning, fostering creativity, and preserving and interpreting the Town's historical record. The Library is a key information, technology, and programmatic hub. In addition to its wonderful collections, the Library, Museum & Archives provides a diverse array of programs such as the Sunday Speaker Series, children's storytimes, living history programs, book clubs, art exhibits, and historical cemetery tours. Each July, the Annual Used Book Sale attracts thousands of visitors.
The Museum & Archives provides the only public collection of local history materials and artifacts in Stockbridge, providing an essential resource for researchers. The historical collection includes notable objects from local historical figures, such as theologian Jonathan Edwards' writing desk; a contemporary portrait of African American Revolutionary War patriot Agrippa Hull; portraits by Ammi Phillips; and original documents by eighteenth century Mahican Indians, Stockbridge's first settlers. The works of Longfellow, Reinhold Niebuhr, Richard Watson Gilder, and members of the Sedgwick and Field families are all represented. Also invaluable are account books, legal briefs, sermons, journals, family letters, and other records dating back to 1738.
