Massachusetts has a thing for spring blossoms! From flower shows to our own local gardens, the whole state treasurers each pepping petal like a truffle. Blossom chasing is just as moving as our world renowned fall foliage, and this season brings even more fresh hues to lighten the landscapes from the darker winter months. Throughout the Commonwealth, botanical gardens and flower shows are scheduled to open, so as we bid adieu to winter we invite you to put some spring in your step and appreciate the beauty of buds in bloom. Here are just a few to get you started…

Flower Shows & Festivities

Spring Bulb Show – Northampton
March 4 – 19
Venture out to the Botanic Garden of Smith College for authentic artist interpretations of the flowering bulb nurseries of Holland. Come see these painted capsules juxtaposed by their real-life blooming counterparts.
Boston Flower and Garden Show – Boston
March 22 – 26
Dubbed Horti-Con, the theme of the 2017 Boston Flower and Garden Show is “Superheroes of the Garden” and it will honor the innovative garden tools and super-human dedication of great botanists.
Daffodil Festival on Nantucket – Nantucket
April 28 – 30
Nothing says spring awakening like daffodil petals coming to life. The Daffodil Festival on Nantucket celebrates those pretty yellow pieces of sunshine with art shows, parades, and contests for all ages.
Lilac Sunday – Boston
May 14
Stroll through the hallowed grounds at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum as the lilac is singled out for a day-long celebration. In addition to lilac tours there will be guided discoveries of other special collections and fun activities for everyone in the family.

Roch-Jones-Duff House and Gardens Museum – New Bedford
The Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum is the only whaling mansion open to the public in New England, has a full city block of gardens and offers house tours and educational programs for students.

Berkshire Botanical Garden – Stockbridge
One of the oldest public gardens in the United States, Berkshire Botanical Garden focuses on educating the community in the art and science of gardening with an emphasis on cherishing the environment and the native roots of New England.
Tower Hill Botanical Garden – Boylston
This 132-acre estate has something for everyone. Take in the fragrance of the Limonaia, admire the 238 trees representing 119 pre-20th-century varieties of apples in the Frank L. Harrington, Sr. Orchard, and bask in the light shining through the roof of the Marjorie Doyle Rockwell Orangerie.
