If you can smell the tang of the salt marshes and watch nearby cranberry bogs pass by, you’re probably on the Cape Cod Central Railroad, on one of their wonderful excursions along some of the most charming terrain in this celebrated corner of the Commonwealth.
Once upon a time, railroad service ran all the way to Provincetown, but over the past seventeen years, the service in these parts has been exclusively provided by this fine excursion railroad which has continued to offer a range of wonderful outings for rail fans and those seeking to experience the Cape in an entirely different fashion than from an automobile or other form of transit.
Currently, the railroad runs excursions trains from May to October and visitors can pick from their exciting coastal excursion train ride, their celebrated dinner train, and the ever popular Polar Express Train Ride, which takes place in November and December.
The rides are all delightful as passengers will depart from Hyannis and travel through West Barnstable and Sandwich down to the Cape Cod Canal. Along the way, they’ll see lobstermen’s shacks, historic railroad buildings, and experience the laid-back lifestyle of these parts. It’s also worth noting that the equipment used by the railroad has a wonderful provenance. Their equipment roster includes cranberry-colored (what else?) painted cars from the Illinois Central and Canadian National railroads that have been lovingly restored for your comfort.
I would be remiss if I did not recommend the dinner train which offers a three hour ride, complete with beautiful music and soft candlelight. It’s the perfect way to celebrate an anniversary or other special occasion with friends and loved ones.
Whatever ride you select, you’re sure to have a wonderful time on the Cape Cod Central Railroad as it offers a one-of-a-kind way to experience Cape Cod. And of course, make sure and tell your friends as they’ll want to join you on a future sojourn.
